Witold Pilecki’s career, what is his profession?
Pilecki volunteered to be kidnapped by the invading Germans in order to infiltrate the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1940. He created a resistance movement in Auschwitz that grew to encompass hundreds of inmates, and he surreptitiously drafted files detailing German atrocities that were smuggled out to Home Army headquarters and shared with the Western Allies. Pilecki fought in the Warsaw Uprising of August–October 1944 after fleeing Auschwitz.
He was interned in a German prisoner-of-war camp when it was suppressed. He stayed loyal to the Polish Government-in-Exile in London after the communist seizure of Poland. In 1945, he returned to Poland to report on the situation there to the Exile Government. Pilecki authored Witold’s Report on the Auschwitz concentration camp before returning, fearing that he would be assassinated by Poland’s new communist government.
He was seized by the secret police in 1947 on suspicions of working for “foreign imperialism” and murdered in 1948 following torture and a show trial. For decades, Pilecki’s narrative was mostly forgotten; in Fighting Auschwitz: The Resistance Movement in the Concentration Camp, Polish historian Józef Garliski, himself a former Auschwitz inmate who immigrated to Britain after the war, gave one of the earliest accounts of Pilecki’s expedition to Auschwitz (1975).
