Freitas attended Oregon State University and was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft. After the 1972 season, he was named to the Pro Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts selected his son Makoa in the 2003 NFL Draft. Freitas worked in education for a number of years after leaving the NFL, notably at the Ke Alii Pauahi Foundation, Kamehameha Schools, and GRG Enterprises.
He was also the chancellor of Hawai’i Community College for six years, the University of Hawai’i System’s vice president for university relations, and the University of Hawai’i at Mnoa’s associate sports director. During the 2010–2014 NCAA conference realignment, Freitas was key in negotiating a relocation of the University of Hawaii football team from the Western Athletic Conference to the Mountain West Conference as a vice president of the University of Hawaii System.
From 2013 until his resignation in 2015, Freitas was the chancellor of the University of Hawaii at West Oahu.
