Jody Lukoki, a DR Congo international who began his professional career with Ajax, has died at the age of 29. Lukoki has also played for PEC Zwolle, Bulgarian club Ludogorets, and Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor, and is currently on the books of FC Twente in the Netherlands.
“This unfortunate occurrence has shocked and emotionally moved the club,” read a statement on the FC Twente website. “FC Twente expresses its condolences to his family and wishes them strength as they cope with this tragic loss.” The cause of Lukoki’s death has yet to be determined.

Jody Lukoki was 29 years old. He was born on 15 November, 1992 in Kindu, Zaire. Due to the First Congo War, he immigrated to the Netherlands with his parents and twin brother, NAC Breda player Madjer Lukoki, at an early age.

Lukoki joined Ajax’s youth divisions after playing for VVA/Spartan and Young Boys Haarlem. On 19 January 2011, he made his first team debut in a 2–0 home win over Feyenoord, replacing Lorenzo Ebecilio in the 80th minute. Lukoki would remain the third-choice winger under Frank de Boer, despite having contributed to three national titles in his first three seasons with Ajax. He was given liberty to explore other options. He was loaned out to newly promoted SC Cambuur for the season on August 2, 2013.
Lukoki signed a three-year contract with PEC Zwolle on August 7, 2014, for a reported €1.5 million, joining a squad that had recently defeated Ajax in the KNVB Cup final as well as the Johan Cruijff Shield.
Lukoki joined Bulgarian club Ludogorets Razgrad on June 26, 2015. In the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round matches against Mladost Podgorica, the Congolese scored three goals. On November 26, 2016, he scored his first league goal in a match against Botev Plovdiv.
Lukoki signed a two-year contract with Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor in July 2020. Lukoki has represented the Netherlands at several levels of youth. At the Festival International ‘Espoirs’ 2012 in Toulon, France, he finished third with the U-19 team. He was a dual citizen who could represent either the Netherlands or the Democratic Republic of Congo at the senior level. Lukoki was called up to the DR Congo team for the match against Iraq on March 19, 2015, and got his first cap in the game.
