Few people who saw Frank Meehan riding his mobility scooter around Helensburgh, Scotland’s west coast town, could guess what kind of life he had led. This quiet and humble man was a former Cold Warrior whose illustrious career in the US diplomatic service covered practically the entire length of the Cold War that defined the twentieth century.

Frank Meehan was 98 years old when he died. Meehan was born in the US city of East Orange, New Jersey, to British parents who were visiting the country for a short time. When his homesick mother returned home, he moved to Scotland and grew up in Clydebank, a Scottish shipbuilding town eight miles west of Glasgow along the River Clyde.

Frank Meehan Career, What was his profession?
Meehan’s first assignment with the Foreign Service was as an information officer at the United States High Commission for Germany from 1951 to 1952. He subsequently went to the United States Consulate General in Hamburg, where he served from 1952 to 1953. When the Soviet authorities put the debris on display, the US Ambassador to Russia dispatched him to see it. He was then posted to Berlin as their political officer, and it was in this capacity that he witnessed the 1962 prisoner swap between the US and the Soviet Union.
His rank continued to rise, and he was named Deputy Chief of Mission in Budapest from 1968 to 1972, then counsellor for political matters in Bonn from 1972 to 1975. His first Ambassadorship came in 1979, when he was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia for a brief period from March 23 to October 20, 1980. From September 16, 1985, through November 30, 1988, he served as the United States Ambassador to East Germany. He was there when US President Ronald Reagan delivered the iconic “Tear down this wall!” address.
