FBI: Made a mistake in killing Most Wanted Jess LaCroix.
Even though the third season of Most Wanted is just halfway through, a handful of original cast members have already left the show. Special Agent Clinton Skye, played by Nathaniel Arcand, left after Season 2 and Special Agent Kenny Crosby, played by Kellan Lutz, left following the Season 3 premiere.
However, Julian McMahon’s final episode as Jess LaCroix in this week’s episode inflicted the series’ heaviest blow. Regrettably, his departure was not handled well.
“Shattered” followed Jess’ team as they investigated a deadly domestic abuser who had killed a number of people while on the hunt for his wife who had fled. The team followed the suspect to a hospital in New Jersey, where Jess discovered the man’s wife in the parking lot as the episode came to an end. Before anyone could intervene, the suspect fired fire, striking Jess in the neck before being taken down by the rest of the crew. In the FBI universe, Jess’ final, terrible moments were him bleeding to death on the ground.
David Hudgins talked to TVLine about his decision to murder Jess
Executive producer David Hudgins discussed the decision to murder Jess rather than write her off in an interview with TVLine.
He said, “We talked about every possible iteration of it, and ultimately, what [we] kept coming back to session after session was, ‘Look, this is Most Wanted. We’re chasing the worst of the worst, the most dangerous of the dangerous, and there is a very real risk associated with the job.’ We ultimately decided that [killing Jess off] was true to the premise of the show.”
Julian McMahon said in January that he would be leaving the procedural created by Dick Wolf, who is also the creator of NBC’s trilogy of One Chicago series, “in favor of further creative projects.” Fans weren’t surprised when Jess left the show, but the manner in which she did so felt absolutely wrong. Regardless of Hudgins’ claim that the show’s premise was adhered to, murdering Jess was a disservice to the character for various reasons demonstrated throughout the course of his three-plus seasons.
