On Saturday at Southern Hills, PGA Championship leader Mito Pereira benefited from a contentious drop after his ball was permitted to drop from the first cut of rough into the fairway.
On the ninth hole, the Chilean’s drive veered left and landed up in an area where spectators were crossing the hole. It meant he could drop his ball anywhere within a club length, finally landing in the fairway.
““I can’t believe this drop. Where that ball is, he’s got to keep the flag in line. He’s not going backwards. That, to me is quite amazing to be able to get it onto the fairway. That’s pretty warped stuff,” Sky Sports’ Wayne Riley said on commentary. Nick Dougherty described it as a “monumental drop” whilst fans on social media called it “scandalous”, “lucky” and a “joke of a drop.”
He didn’t profit or take advantage of the drop in the end, as his ball grabbed and spun back off the green, resulting in a bogey. If he had preserved his initial lie, his shot might have released more and stayed on the putting surface.
He was three shots clear at the time, and his bogey at nine was the second in a row. With three birdies on the back nine, the World No.100 shot 69 and moved to nine-under-par for a three-stroke lead. On Sunday, he’ll be in the last group with Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris, who are three strokes behind him at six-under.
On Sunday, he will try to become the first South American to win the PGA Championship, which is only his second Major and the first in which he has made the cut.
