“This is difficult.” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said Monday, “This is a tragic case for everyone – it’s a heartbreaking situation for this city.”
Alvaro Larrama, a 39-year-old father of four from East Boston, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Daniel Martinez, 23. His arraignment in Boston Municipal Court took place mere hours after he surrendered to cops.
Martinez, a native of the Chicago region, was in Boston to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with pals. He was stabbed on Union Street shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday and brought to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to police. He passed away shortly before 3 a.m. on Sunday.
Martinez and a buddy were seen on security camera visiting the Sons of Boston tavern on Union Street, where Larrama worked as a bouncer, according to prosecutors. He stayed at the pub without incident for a while, then exited and returned to the bar by getting back in line.

Martinez and Larrama appeared to engage into a fight while standing in line, according to video recovered by police. He then began walking away, prompting Larrama to pursue him, according to the prosecutor. Martinez was then stabbed by the bouncer, according to the prosecutor.
After the stabbing, Larrama walked inside the pub and washed his hands and turned his shirt inside out, according to the prosecutor. The bouncer then exited the establishment via the back entrance.
A call for a stabbed victim prompted police to arrive, and pubs in the neighborhood were closed for the rest of the night.
According to court testimony, the Boston Police Department’s Fugitive Unit made immediate inroads into the case Saturday after speaking with many of the defendant’s coworkers and witnesses at the incident.
Larrama had already spent time for larceny charges dating back to 2001, as well as a drug-related offense. His counsel stated that he has been without a conviction for more than 20 years.
Martinez served in the Marine Corps and retired as a sergeant last year. The Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal were among his honors.
Martinez’s family members seemed clearly upset in court and declined to comment after the hearing.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them, as well as all who knew and served with Mr. Martinez,” Hayden stated.
“This does not reflect our city, Boston, or who we are,” Hayden added. “I believe we can come together in love and support so that both residents and visitors to our city understand what a truly great city it is.”
Larrama will be jailed without bail and will appear in court for a probable cause hearing on April 28.
