Victor Paganuzzi, the designer of the classic “Sunday Morning” set, died at the age of 90.
Paganuzzi, the legendary set designer for the long-running morning show “Sunday Morning” and a slew of other CBS shows, died on Thursday. He was 90 years old.
Paganuzzi began his work with CBS in 1962, as a set designer for “The Jackie Gleason Show.” He studied history and political science at Iona College. He went on to work on other shows, including the daytime drama “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing,” for which he was nominated for two Emmys.
In 1974, he moved to CBS News, where he spent the next quarter-century designing the network’s election coverage and special broadcasts, as well as news programs such as “CBS Evening News,” “Face to Face with Connie Chung,” and “The Early Show.”
The design of “CBS Sunday Morning,” which premiered in 1979, is his most well-known contribution. Paganuzzi designed the unusual set, which has remained in use to this day.
When Paganuzzi announced his retirement in 2011, he revealed that the “Sunday Morning” set was originally designed for a sports broadcast that never aired. He’d chosen baseball as the sport to translate to his design, and designed roles for the anchor and correspondents that resembled a baseball diamond.
Shad Northshield, the founding producer of “Sunday Morning,” had the original design modified after the sports show failed, with sports graphics removed and plexiglass panels depicting the sun and text added.
“It wasn’t scenery that you were looking at,” Paganuzzi said. “It was just there, almost floating across a horizon and sort of echoed the feeling of what the show was all about. The set did not upstage the show.”
Paganuzzi was honored with a plaque inside the CBS Broadcast Center upon his retirement, praising him for “demonstrating the epitome of class to his peers” for 49 years, describing him as “a true gentleman constructing scenery with passion, quality, and originality.”
