Tyrone Winfrey, a 63-year-old education activist for Detroit students, passed away.
Detroit education leader Tyrone E. Winfrey Sr. passed away on Nov. 5, 2022, at the age of 63. He’d been battling prostate cancer for more than five years.
He died at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

“Deacon Tyrone Winfrey leaves the legacy of if you absolutely want to do better and be better educationally, there are all kinds opportunities out here, and he was one to make them available to the young people of metropolitan Detroit,”.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said,
“Detroit has lost a great public servant in the passing of Tyrone Winfrey Sr. My condolences go out to his wife Janice and their children,”. “Tyrone was a tireless advocate for the educating of Detroit’s children. Many attribute their success at the University of Michigan to Tyrone and his strong passion for equal access to higher education.”
Tyrone Winfrey served as the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s executive director of community outreach. He formerly held the position of President of the Detroit Board of Education. Winfrey was chosen by DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti earlier this year to take the lead in organizing a sizable alumni gala event.
A Taste of Livernois block party, a city bike tour, and an award show gala were among the weekend’s events that drew alumni from all over the city and country back to Detroit and the school system.
Winfrey has a strong commitment to the academic success and college acceptance of Detroit students. He formerly held the positions of Associate Director and Director of the Detroit Admissions Office at the University of Michigan as well as Outreach Admissions Coordinator at Michigan State University.
