Those pages alone, according to Dr. Staley, are worth $750,000. He purchased the papers of scores of literary heavyweights over the next 25 years, including Doris Lessing, Jorge Luis Borges, J.M. Dr. Staley is survived by his wife, Carolyn (O’Brien) Staley, also known as Muffi; his daughters, Carrie Staley and Mary Wheeler; another son, Tom Jr.; and six grandkids, in addition to his son Tim. Dr. Staley’s zealous and successful pursuit of the papers of so many literary luminaries gave him the impression that he had led the Ransom Center to victory in a state that thrives on big ideas. “Winning is a source of tremendous pride here,” he told The New Yorker. “They like to be successful.”
