Sophie Ecclestone Career

Early Career

Ecclestone excelled at cricket from a young age. She humiliated her new school’s headmaster once when he permitted her to play in an after-school cricket match. She told BBC Sport in 2020:

“I don’t think he realized I was a cricket player… ‘Yeah, she can join in,’ he answered when my mother told him I could play.

“I got all of the boys out, and I bowled the first ball to the headmaster. ‘So, you’re OK at cricket?’ he asked afterward.

“After that, he was extremely polite to me for the rest of school.”

She obtained a more formal cricketing schooling at Alvanley Cricket Club in Helsby, Cheshire, where she was the club’s only female player on the pathway. She began playing in the club’s famed junior division at the age of seven and went on to Helsby High School.

Ecclestone’s brother James was one of her teammates when she made her debut with the Alvanley boys’ first team. She was so naturally skilled, according to the club’s then left-arm spinner, Robin Fisher, who had previously played for Cheshire, that she didn’t require much coaching. Some of the lads predicted that she would play for England when she grew up, but she was only playing cricket for enjoyment at the time.

In 2013, Ecclestone began playing for the Cheshire women’s county team. Lancashire saw her and she joined with them in 2015, making her top-level domestic debut.

Ecclestone was then quickly promoted to England’s Academy team. She went on her first tour abroad with the Academy in Sri Lanka when she was 16 years old. Despite being homesick, she took 16 wickets for the Academy in a tri-series against Australia A and Sri Lanka A, including four in a match against the latter at Panagoda.

At the age of 17, she earned her WT20I debut during Pakistan’s tour to England on July 3, 2016. She had the fortunate fortune to take her first wicket with a full throw throughout the contest. She was picked to England’s women’s One Day International team in September 2016 ahead of their tour to the West Indies the following month.

Ecclestone was in contention to play for England, the tournament’s eventual winner, as the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup neared. She was still 17, though, and had another round of exams to complete before graduating. As a result, Ecclestone, her parents, and England’s then-coach Mark Robinson decided that she would not play for the national team that summer.

Ecclestone has been a regular in the England team since completing those exams. Her height of 6 feet (1.8 m), which provides her an extra angle, combined with her ability to control the ball, qualifies her for all three game formats. [5] She made her Test debut for England women against Australian women in the Women’s Ashes on November 9, 2017.

2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20

She was picked to England’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia in January 2020. Ecclestone collected her 50th wicket in WT20Is and her 100th wicket in international cricket on March 1, 2020, in England’s final group match of the tournament. She became the youngest woman in WT20I cricket history to take 50 wickets in 34 matches. She finished the tournament as the world’s number one WT20I bowler, with eight wickets at an average of 6.12 and an economy rate of just 3.23.

Ecclestone was the first England bowler since Anya Shrubsole in 2016, and the first England spinner since Danielle Hazell in 2015. When the news was revealed, she told The Cricketer in June 2020 that it was both overwhelming and the realization of a long-held goal.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Ecclestone was named to a group of 24 players to begin training ahead of international women’s fixtures beginning in England on June 18, 2020. Ecclestone took her 100th international wicket during England’s tour of New Zealand in February 2021. Ecclestone was picked to England’s Test squad for a one-off match against India in June 2021.
