Following her death on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Mama Sinatu Sanni, the guardian of Olumo Rock goddess, was claimed to be dearly missed by family members, tourists, and locals of Ikija, Abeokuta, where Olumo Rock is located. Sanni, also known as the tourism center’s mother goddess, died at the age of 137.
The peak is revered by the Egba people.
According to legend, the Abeokuta settlers, the Egba people, respect the mountain for providing them with a natural haven during the 19th-century inter-tribal strife.
Traditionalists in Abeokuta believe that the rock, which is adored by them, is inhabited by spirits.
Sanni has been another tourist draw for many years, since she provided unusual knowledge on the famed Olumo Rock. After a brief illness, she passed away—Son Her son, Solomon Adio, who verified his mother’s death in Abeokuta, claimed she died after a brief illness at her Itoko apartment in Abeokuta.
The elderly lady passed away just a few months before her 138th birthday.
Adio’s late mother, whom he characterized as a doyen, lived for more than 40 years in one of the enclaves beneath the rock, where she served the gods of the rock.
He said: “Mama will be 138 years old by August 5. She died after a brief illness. She was the mother of the deity. We are going to miss her a lot. Mama lived her life for the rock, for the deity. She was dedicated to the gods.”
Mother’s Loss
Mrs Mosinat Amusa, Mama Olumo’s first child, also spoke about her mother’s loss, saying that although though her mother died at a young age, she was nonetheless heartbroken by her death. However, Amusa, who is 90 years old, expressed gratitude for her mother’s life. She expressed hope that some of her children would pick up where mama had left off. Mr Samad Sanni, Mama Olumo’s grandson, told journalists that she was buried on Thursday night according to Orisa Egun traditional traditions.
He said though her family is not from Orisa Egun, her barreness took her to the deity, which she served for the rest of her life.He said: “We buried her last night, according to Orisa traditional rite.
Mama belongs to Orisa Egun, and there is nothing we can do than to bury her in that rite.“Anyone who is an Orisa Egun cannot be buried outside, they’re buried inside their house, so mama was buried inside her room. All other activities will follow after the burial rite.“Mama’s family is not from Orisa Egun, but it was when mama was looking for a child, that was what brought mama into serving Orisa Egun.”
