Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, a former Punjab minister, was detained under the Prevention of Corruption Act by the Vigilance Bureau.
He was apprehended in Amloh, according to official sources, in connection with the recent arrest of DFO Guramanpreet Singh in a corruption case.
Harminder Singh Hummy, the arrested DFO, and contractor, apparently provided details to the CBI revealing wrongdoings in the forest department, prompting Dharamsot’s arrest.
According to sources, the former minister had ties to the detained forest authorities.
He’s suspected of being engaged in the illegal felling of more than 25,000 trees.
In this case, Kamaljit Singh, a Punjabi daily reporter located in Khanna, has also been arrested.
The former minister was taken away by the state vigilance unit in Mohali, where he is said to have been charged with different sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act as well as Section 120-B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
After he is questioned, more portions will be added, according to a VB official.
Sangat Singh Gilzian, the former forest minister who served for three months, is also named in the FIR.
Six more people are listed in the FIR, which was filed under various sections of the Anti-Corruption Act. DFO Amit Chauhan’s name is also mentioned in the FIR.
According to sources, CM Bhagwant Mann has given his approval for all of the defendants to be arrested.
According to senior vigilance authorities, Dharamsot has been suspected of making more than Rs 100 crore through commissions in tree felling and approving other forest department-related activities.
“Every work/project done by the forest department has his cut.” According to reports, he was receiving a commission of Rs 1 crore from one contractor. Forest activities are being carried out by more than 100 contractors, according to the officials.
Sangat Singh Gilzian, a former minister, is accused of receiving at least Rs 6.4 crore in commission for installing tree guards. During Gilzian’s stint as forest minister, he allegedly received Rs 800 for each tree guard put, and at least 80,000 tree guards were installed.
