Cardenas worked as an experimental test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, from June 1947 to July 1949, and was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters for his work at Edwards.
Captaining the B-29 launch airplane that unleashed the X-1 experimental rocket plane in which Capt. Charles “Chuck” Yeager became the first human to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947 was undoubtedly his most remarkable achievement. Cardenas also contributed to the development of jet aircraft by test flying the P-59 and XB-45, the Air Force’s first jet fighter and bomber, respectively.
He was also the YB-49 flying wing’s operations officer during testing. Cardenas was the officer in charge of the investigation when the YB-49 crashed in 1948, killing Capt. Glenn Edwards and Maj. Daniel Forbes. He was a B-24 Liberator pilot in the 506th Bombardment Squadron in the European Theater of Operations during World War II before becoming a test pilot.
Before being shot down over Germany in March 1944, he received the Air Medal and two oak leaf clusters for bombing missions. Despite flak wounds to his skull, he returned to Allied control. Cardenas was posted to Wright Field, Ohio, as a test pilot after returning to the United States in November 1944. He attended Experimental Flight Test School there.
