Alexander shared backup time with Walter Easley behind starting running back Dave Riley during his first season. Alexander had 426 yards and a touchdown on the ground as a rookie. In 1978, Alexander shared the starting time with freshman Dane Conwell during his sophomore year.
Despite sharing carries, Alexander carried for 310 yards, good for third on the team. Alexander’s junior season, 1979, was his first as a full starter for the Mountaineers. That season, Alexander carried for 656 yards and two touchdowns, the best of his career. In 1980, Alexander’s final year, he had his best season. Alexander rushed for 1,064 yards and 5 touchdowns that season, a career-high and a team-high. The 4th most yards in a single season in Mountaineer history at the time. Alexander was rated second on the school’s career rushing yards tally when he left WVU.
Alexander has 2,474 rushing yards in his career, which ranks him 10th on the Mountaineers’ all-time rushing yardage chart. The Los Angeles Rams selected Alexander in the tenth round of the 1981 NFL Draft, and he spent two seasons with the team.
