Alexander shared backup time with Walter Easley behind starting running back Dave Riley during his first season. Alexander had 426 yards and a touchdown on the ground as a rookie. In 1978, Alexander shared the starting time with freshman Dane Conwell during his sophomore year.

Despite sharing carries, Alexander carried for 310 yards, good for third on the team. Alexander’s junior season, 1979, was his first as a full starter for the Mountaineers.
