The 2021 Archibald award winner was picked unanimously by the judges and unveiled on Friday by Michael Brand, director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, who praised the painting as “a stunning portrait.”
Wegner, who has been a finalist five times, said through video link from lockdown in Melbourne: “When Michael called, my wife fell into tears, and I was speechless.” This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. It’s the culmination of years spent in the studio, as well as recognition of my work.
“Guy Warren, born in the same year the Archibald Prize was initially presented in 1921, celebrated his 100th birthday in April. This isn’t why he painted Guy, but it’s a beautiful coincidence,” he continued.
Warren, a well-known artist who won the Archibald Prize in 1985 for his portrait of the artist Bert Flugelman, attended the Art Gallery of NSW event in person, wearing the same fuchia pink pullover featured in his painting.
The centenarian artist, who lives in Greenwich on Sydney’s lower north shore, said he never met Melbourne-based Wegner until being asked to sit for the image.

He remarked, “I’d like to get to know the guy better since he definitely has a lot of skill.”
“It’s a bloody good painting… it’s in the entire tradition of good portrait painting, which dates back a very long way. Secondly, it’s an excellent likeness. Finally, I’ve been told that speaks something about my character, but I’m not the one to assess that; I’m not sure.”
At Friday’s announcement, Brand said he aspired to look as happy as Warren when he reached the 100-year mark.
