Spann left Michigan shortly after arriving to work in Gary, Indiana, and served in the Korean War before returning to Chicago, Illinois, where he worked in a steel mill, drove a cab, and fixed television sets.
Spann handled the careers of major blues and soul artists, including B.B. King, in the 1960s. Spann was a part-owner of a number of clubs, including the Burning Spear. After WVON was sold in 1975, Spann assisted in the launch of WXOL, a new blues and gospel station on the same frequency, in 1979.
In 1991, Spann ran for mayor of Chicago as a Republican but was defeated by George Gottlieb in the primary.
Spann continued to promote blues festivals and controlled Memphis, Tennessee’s WXSS radio station in the 1980s.
