In referring its findings to the CPS, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, also known as Billy, investigated the allegations and charged the officer. Leeds Crown Court was due to hear his case on 7 March, but he was found dead in a home in Chapeltown on Friday. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was due to stand trial in less than three weeks.
South Yorkshire Police released a statement on Billy’s death, saying: “We are heartbroken to hear of Billy’s death, and are thinking of Billy’s family and loved ones. We will offer them our continued support.”
