In a brutal finish to a 14-year marriage on the verge of divorce, the school teacher cut his wife to death and died after drinking poison in the rural village of Barrackpore on Friday night.

Omatie Deobarran, 36, confronted her husband Amar, 41, about a threat to expel her from her home an hour before her murder, and recorded the dispute on her iPhone.
Omatie was hacked several times and died on the spot, while her husband died hours later in the hospital. The murder-suicide shocked the South Trace, Barrackpore hamlet, where the couple resided with their two children, a 13-year-old girl, and an eight-year-old boy, at the husband’s extended family house.
Amar was a teacher at the Avocat Vedic Primary School, while Omatie worked as a supervisor at Bankers Insurance in Chaguanas. Officers went to a report of a possible murder and found the couple’s daughter in the street with her grandma, according to police reports.
The child told police that her father, armed with a cutlass, came to the back of the house around 7.40 p.m. on Friday and attacked her mother. She dashed for assistance, alerting her grandma and neighbors. Amar was observed fleeing the house with a container of what seemed to be toxic liquid in his hand.
Omatie Found Face Down
Omatie was found face down in the back of the house, with cut wounds on her left hand and the left side of her neck. Paramedics were dispatched, and Omatie was pronounced dead. Amar was subsequently discovered frothing in a shed behind the property by police and paramedics.
He was carried to the Princes Town District Health Facility before being moved to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he died just after 1.30 a.m. Omatie’s brother Jagdesh Kanchan, 31, said Omatie’s daughter called and told him that her father had chopped her mother, whom the family called Jemma, and fled to the back of their house in Mohess Road, Penal.
“We got the call about 8.30 pm. By the time, we reached over there, it was close to 9 pm.” Police and other relatives were already there.
“We could not get to go in to see anything.”
Kanchan claimed that when Omatie’s relatives were outside the home, some of Amar’s relatives pulled him out of the back and into a van. “He swallowed poison, so he wasn’t in his right mind.”
