Even as a young prodigy, Mr. Kalichstein had a sense of line and timing that set him unique. In 1967, Donal Henahan wrote in The New York Times that Mr. Kalichstein’s Carnegie Hall debut “carried enough impact to remind one of Horowitz, and that is not a small thing to say,” adding that while there was still some brash impetuosity in his playing, he could already sustain “a long, poetic arc as only a born musician can.”
