Joseph Kalichstein, a pianist known for his subtlety and refinement, has died at the age of 76.
Joseph Kalichstein, an Israeli-American pianist known for his subtle, nuanced technique as a member of the prestigious Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, passed away on March 31 in Manhattan. He was 76 years old at the time.
Pancreatic cancer, according to his son Avi.
Whether in his early solo concerts or later appearances on the chamber music tour with his piano trio, which included violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson, critics agreed that Mr. Kalichstein had an extraordinary naturalness throughout his more than 50-year career.
Even as a young prodigy, Mr. Kalichstein had a sense of line and timing that set him unique. In 1967, Donal Henahan wrote in The New York Times that Mr. Kalichstein’s Carnegie Hall debut “carried enough impact to remind one of Horowitz, and that is not a small thing to say,” adding that while there was still some brash impetuosity in his playing, he could already sustain “a long, poetic arc as only a born musician can.”
My condolences to Mr. Kalichstein’s family, friends, students, and colleagues.
