Legal representatives for Operation Dudula chief Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini have expressed worry that obtaining bail for him will be difficult. On Saturday, Advocate Ike Khumalo said they were able to contact a prosecutor late Friday, but the investigating officer’s telephone was turned off, so they couldn’t start the bail process.
Dlamini was arrested on Thursday after Victor Ramerafe, 59, of Dobsonville in Soweto, filed a criminal complaint against him.
Last Sunday, members of Operation Dudula, led by Dlamini, allegedly ransacked Ramerafe’s home after the movement suspected it of being a drug den. This Monday, Ramerafe was escorted by EFF members to register the case, denying the charges.
Dlamini has been detained at the Johannesburg Central Police Station for two nights. “We’re still at the police station today; the IO (investigating officer) arrived to make an ID parade, but we were told the witness wasn’t there.” They also want to postpone us till Monday,” Khumalo stated on Saturday.
Offense
He further said: “This is an offense which qualifies him for police bail even without a prosecutor. Unfortunately, it seems as if there is political pressure from above from what I can understand from them not to release Dlamini. We are still pushing, we are still here at the police station arguing and pressurizing these guys to do their work. We are trying our best that he gets bail today.”
Some of Khumalo’s coworkers went to the High Court on an emergency basis, but it was difficult because the police had a 48-hour grace period to hold him until his court appearance on Monday.
Dlamini is scheduled to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday if he is not granted bail.
Initially, Khumalo stated, the accusations were presented (for) the purpose of obtaining bail.
According to Khumalo, his client was charged with housebreaking, theft, and malicious damage to property, and it appears that intimidation may be added to the allegations.
Dlamini Arrest
Hundreds of members of Operation Dudula are protesting outside the police station. A number of political groups have joined them, including the Patriotic Alliance, whose vice president Kenny Kunene has come out in support of Dlamini.
During Dlamini’s arrest, Kunene lifted his brows. He even warned him not to consume any of the food provided by the cops.
Dlamini’s mother had gone to the police station earlier in the day on Saturday. She is thought to have brought meals for her son. Others arrived to bring him food as well.
The ID parade has not yet taken place, according to Kunene, but they will continue to work with Dlamini’s legal team.

A member of Operation Dudula, Thabo Molefe, claimed Dlamini was innocent. He also claimed to have been present on the day the party visited Ramerafe’s residence. Police, according to Molefe, was also there that day.
