Mwai Kibaki was 90 years old when he died. He was born on 15 November 1931 in Gatuyaini village, Othaya division of Kenya’s then Nyeri District, now Nyeri County. Though he was baptized as Emilio Stanley by Italian missionaries when he was a child, he has always been known as Mwai Kibaki in public.

Kibaki was elected as a Member of Parliament for Nairobi’s Donholm Constituency (later renamed Bahati and now Makadara) in 1963. In 1974, Kibaki was up against Mrs. Jael Mbogo for the Donholm Constituency seat, which he had only narrowly and controversially won in the 1969 elections. During these years, Kibaki’s political approach was regarded as gentlemanly and non-confrontational. He also thanked his family and all Kenyans for their support throughout his time in office, highlighting the many accomplishments his government had done. Kibaki studied economics, history, and political science at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He earned a First-Class Honors Degree in Economics from there. Kibaki stayed in Uganda after graduation to work for the Shell Company of East Africa. He then won a scholarship to study postgraduate economics at any British university, which he chose to do at the London School of Economics.
