Centene said Thursday that Michael Neidorff, the company’s longtime CEO, has passed away. He was 79 years old at the time.
Neidorff had taken a medical leave of absence two months prior, and Sarah London, an internal Centene employee, was elected CEO last month, succeeding Neidorff, who had been the company’s CEO since 1996. According to the company, Neidorff had taken on a new job as executive chairman until the end of 2022, and he planned to retire later this year.
“After a long illness, Michael F. Neidorff passed away surrounded by his family and friends on Thursday, April 7, 2022,” Centene said in a statement and obituary released on behalf of Neidorff’s family. The reason for death has not been revealed.
Michael was Centene Corporation’s visionary leader for more than 25 years,” the company statement said. “He built a remarkable American business success story and his commitment to providing affordable, high-quality health care to the most vulnerable people transformed lives across the globe.”
Centene grew into a national healthcare behemoth under Neidorff’s leadership, with revenues surpassing $126 billion in 2021 as more Americans signed up for Medicaid, the low-income patient health insurance it administers through state contracts, and individual coverage under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, reached new highs during the pandemic. Centene grew into the Medicare Advantage industry under Neidorff, the privatized health benefits that a variety of health insurers give seniors through contracts with the federal government.
While other health insurers abandoned the Obamacare business of selling individual coverage under the Affordable Care Act, Centene not only kept providing such coverage through a difficult period in 2016 and 2017 but also expanded and is now the largest provider of such subsidized coverage under the law.
