According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Godfrey Karembera was “badly attacked on his legs and back” by police officers who used truncheons.
“He is facing a charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly wearing yellow regalia and telling people in Harare’s CBD to vote for Nelson Chamisa,” the lawyers said.
Karembera was allegedly beaten by police officers and sustained abrasions on his back and soles of his feet after being repeatedly smacked with a baton stick, according to gruesome photographs seen by ZimLive. His lawyers claim he is having difficulty walking.
On Friday, Karembera is scheduled to appear in court.
The activist, who is from Guruve, has been a regular at Citizens Coalition for Change events. He dresses in garb similar to that worn by white garment churches, where men are known as “madzibaba.” His is yellow, the color of the MDC Alliance’s new party, which arose from the ashes.
The CCC claims the ruling Zanu PF of targeting its supporters and disrupting meetings ahead of the March 26 by-elections.
