Paula Rego is the only child of Jose and Maria. Her José worked as an electronics engineer, and her mother, Maria, studied art but never worked as an artist. Paula was born on 26 January 1935 in Lisbon, Portugal. She was of Portuguese nationality and owns a mixed ethnicity background.
Paula had a TB diagnosis at the tender age of three and from the doctor’s advice her parents left Lisbon, her parents built a house in Estoril, where she lived surrounded by trees and sea air, and her grandparents’ summer house in Ericeira. In her early years, she was cared and nurtured for by her grandmother and an aunt, as her parents lived in England where her father worked.
