After 34 years at FOX 8, Kim Holden has announced her retirement.
Few persons can claim to have spent more time on New Orleans television than Kim Holden. For more than 30 years, she’s been a regular on FOX 8.
She has actually grown up in front of the eyes of her viewers and coworkers. Kim began as an intern in 1988 and has never left the company.
She rose fast through the ranks, first as a producer, then reporting, weekend anchoring, assistant news director, and finally returning to the anchor desk to help establish FOX 8’s morning show. Kim has been anchoring the evening news for the past 12 years.
Kim, though, is retiring later this month after 34 years in the industry.
“I think just being able to be on television in your hometown is really special. I’ve been blessed to have a really strong connection with the community,” she said. “When I started, I took a different route. Most people who want to be on the air jump around the markets and work their way up. I had small kids, and I was raising my kids here. My parents were here and are here still.
I always lived five minutes from my mom. I never really had that urge to leave. And the reward I got from being here in my hometown and being able to tell stories that impacted my family and impacted my friends was more rewarding to me than traveling around the country and going to different markets.”
Hurricane Mitch’s Aftermath
Kim has earned prizes for her reporting, and her superiors have trusted her enough to send her out of the state and country to cover key topics throughout her career. She’s covered everything from Hurricane Mitch’s aftermath in Honduras to the Saints’ Super Bowl victory in Miami.
Kim will leave the company later this month. Many others believe she is too young to retire. She feels it’s time to move on after a career in journalism. She claims that the COVID outbreak and Hurricane Ida aided her in making a decision she had been debating for some time.
In retirement, her top priority will be to look after her parents.
“It’s just been it’s been a rough couple of years. But I’m in a position where I can now help the people who’ve helped me – my parents. And be there for our younger family members who really want us more than we’ve been able to give,” she said.
Kim will be able to devote more time to her other interests now that she is retired. She’s recently developed a passion for health coaching and wishes to travel and spend time with her grandchildren.
