What did Ben Zobrist complain?
According to the complaint filed May 6 in Nashville Circuit Court, Yawn, Zobrist claims that he and his wife met Yawn while visiting Community Bible Church in Nashville, where he last played for the Cubs in 2019. According to the lawsuit, Yawn worked as their pastor and was taken into their lives as a “spiritual mentor,” providing the couple with pre-marital counseling in 2005.
According to the lawsuit, Yawn began having regular interactions with Julianna Zobrist in August 2018, often on a daily basis. Yawn allegedly began “secretly pursuing an intimate relationship” with Julianna a short time later, and began meeting her for sex in the spring of 2019.
The relationship lasted into the spring of 2020, with Yawn hiding the nature of the relationship from Ben Zobrist. Yawn and Julianna Zobrist allegedly used “burner phones” to conceal their relationship.
Ben Zobrist texted Yawn around that period, indicating that the former Cubs pitcher was away from the team for spring training in 2019 to work on his marriage.
Yawn is also accused of “using his influence” to get involved in all elements of Zobrist’s “Patriot Forward” charity, including drafting the group’s curriculum and managing other aspects of the organization, such as social media and copyrighting.
Yawn was paid around $36,000 per year for this work. According to the lawsuit, Ben Zobrist also gave around $10,000 per month to the church where Yawn was senior pastor at the time, and donated between $10 and $15,000 to sponsor a pastoral vacation for Yawn’s family.
Yawn’s contract with Patriot Forward expired in March 2019, but he continued to receive a $3,500 monthly compensation until May, according to the lawsuit, which he did “fraudulently.”
