When Bruhin was a star at Powell in 1982, he was one of the best offensive guards in the state. In the mid-1980s, he became a crucial component of the UT offensive line, including the historic 1985 Sugar Bowl team.
Over scholarship offers from Georgia, Kentucky, and Memphis, Bruhin chose UT.
“They all knew I was from Knoxville, and I really wanted to play for Coach (Johnny) Majors,” Bruhin told Knox News in a 2014 interview. “I went to all the camps at UT. I always dreamed about playing there, and it happened. Me don’t know if many people get to live their dream, but I was able to do it.”
He joined in January 1983, in an era when early registrants were uncommon since he was so excited to play for his hometown Vols.
“Everybody said, ‘Are you nuts?’ ” Bruhin said in 2014. “I was with the big boys (that spring practice). I was highly recruited and it went to my head. My age group guys hadn’t shown up yet.
He redshirted that season, but the early start paid off in the end. In 1984, Bruhin was a backup. In 1985, he was promoted to the starting lineup on an injury-plagued offensive line under offensive line coach Phillip Fulmer, and he remained there for the rest of his career.

After redshirting at Tennessee in 1983, Bruhin played most of the 1984 season as a backup to All-American Bill Mayo. He was a starter on a line that included future NFL players Bruce Wilkerson, Harry Galbreath, and David Douglas by the 1985 season, and he put in a “stellar blocking performance” in the 1986 Sugar Bowl.  Despite a knee ailment, he played in 11 games in 1986 and all 12 games in 1987 despite a knee injury.
Bruhin started every game for the Tampa Bay Rays during his debut season in 1988. By 1989, he had earned his way into the starting lineup, but a knee injury in the seventh game of the season forced him to miss a number of games. During the 1990 season, he alternated at left guard with Tom McHale and started numerous games for the Bucs. During the 1991 season, he alternated starting at right guard with Ian Beckles and Tom McHale. In March 1992, Bruhin signed with the Philadelphia Eagles but was released just before the season began. At the age of 57, he died on March 31, 2022.
