Nunge attended Castle High School in Newburgh, Indiana, where he played basketball. He averaged 19.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game as a junior. Nunge led his team to the Class 4A Seymour semistate as a senior, averaging 22.8 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. He was voted All-Metro Player of the Year by the Evansville Courier & Press. He chose Iowa over offers from Clemson, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Creighton, and Vanderbilt, among others, to play college basketball.
Nunge averaged 5.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game as a freshman at Iowa. He decided to redshirt the following season in order to gain strength and hone his talents. Nunge tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in his fifth game as a sophomore, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. As a redshirt sophomore, he averaged 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game before suffering another season-ending right knee injury, this time a torn meniscus. Nunge transferred to Xavier for his junior year. He had a career-high 31 points and 15 rebounds in an 83–63 win over Cincinnati on December 11, 2021.
