Former Lakers coach Jack McKinney was involved in a horrific bike accident that left his brain scrambled and put him on the point of death. The instructor averted a life-threatening injury thanks to a few strands of wire.
McKinney was riding his bike to meet Paul Westhead for a tennis game, as shown in the fifth episode. On the way, Jack nearly collides with an inattentive motorist, but it was just a spectacle for the audience to enjoy.
The real incident occurred after McKinney came to a complete stop in front of the STOP sign. He starts to break, but the braking gears lock up, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop.
He flew out of the bike and landed hard on the ground as a result. He had several injuries, including severe head trauma, and he was on the verge of death. On September 25, 2018, Jack McKinney passed away in a Florida hospice.
He went on to manage the Indiana Pacers after recovering from his injuries and winning the NBA Coach of the Year title in 1981. However, the injuries eventually curled up and hindered his ability to act and participate. He died at the age of 83 after spending the last years of his life in a Bonita Springs-based hospice receiving treatment and care.
