Between 1987 and 1989, an American serial killer is known as the I-65 Killer and the Days Inn Killer murdered three female hotel workers along Interstate 65 in Indiana and Kentucky. He died in 2013 before the crimes could be traced to him, hence he was never convicted of murder during his lifetime. He was Harry Edward Greenwell.
The ‘I-65 killer’ has been identified, bringing an end to a decades-long search.
As authorities tried to solve the slayings of three women in Indiana and Kentucky in the late 1980s, the identity of an elusive figure nicknamed the “Days Inn” and “I-65” killer eluded them for decades.
Investigators have found that Harry Edward Greenwell, who is now deceased, was responsible for the rapes and killings of Vicki Heath, Margaret “Peggy” Gill, and Jeanne Gilbert, according to Indiana State Police and several federal and local organizations. The women worked in motels along the I-65 corridor as clerks.
Investigators have also linked him to a sexual assault of a lady in Columbus, Indiana, in 1990, based on DNA research.
Greenwell, who was 68 years old at the time, died of cancer in Iowa in 2013. “There are detectives in this very room that have been involved in this in some form or another for literally generations,” said Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter. “I hope today might bring a little bit of solace to know that the animal who did this is no longer on this Earth.”
The announcement on Tuesday puts an end to the cold cases of women’s attacks and murders. However, police say there’s a “strong likelihood” Greenwell is linked to other unsolved cases. Detectives are still looking into whether Greenwell, who was born in Kentucky, is linked to other violent crimes across the Midwest, according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield.
