Late Greg Tate was a writer, musician, and producer from the United States. Tate was a longtime reviewer for The Village Voice who specialized in African-American music and culture.

For the Voice, Flyboy in the Buttermilk: Essays on Contemporary America (1992) included 40 of his works. In 2016, he released a sequel, Flyboy 2. He was a founder member of the Black Rock Coalition and the head of Burnt Sugar, and he was also a musician.

When he moved to New York City, he co-founded the Black Rock Coalition to combat prejudices about Black musicians. Through conduction, a style of real-time arranging pioneered by improvising conductor Butch Morris, he also formed Burnt Sugar, a huge avant-garde orchestra that merged elements of free jazz and fusion, R&B, funk, and contemporary classical music. The EP Angels Over Oakanda, the group’s most recent release, was released in September.

Tate has been dubbed “one of the Godfathers of Hip-Hop Journalism” by The Source. His conceptualization of hip-hop as living on a continuum with jazz, claiming for the former the same level of cultural appreciation and investigation as the latter, was a significant contribution.
