Gopi Chand Narang, a renowned Urdu scholar, has passed away.
Prof. Gopi Chand Narang, an eminent Urdu scholar and former president of the Sahitya Akademi, died in the United States on Wednesday. The 91-year-old was residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his son, Dr. Tarun Narang.
Prof. Narang was instrumental in establishing literary criticism as a full-fledged body of knowledge in Urdu literature, thanks to his keen analysis, academic rigor, and theoretical underpinning.
Prof. Narang was a prolific writer who published over 60 books. His seminal work Urdu Ghazal aur Hindustani Zehn-o Tahzeeb is remembered for examining and tracing the origins of the Urdu ghazal. Ghazal was never seen by Narang as a solely love poetry. He looked into its intellectual complexities and concluded that it communicates with absolute consciousness in the same way that Upanishadic philosophy does.
Hindustani Qisson Se Makhooz Urdu Masnaviyan and Hindustan Ki Tehreek-e-Azadi aur Urdu Shayari forged a new path in understanding not just the complexities of Urdu prose and poetry, but also the socio-cultural milieu in which they were written.
Prof. Narang has spent his entire life working to free Urdu from orthodoxy and communication. He used to suggest that language, like a river, adapts and survives by shifting its banks.
Prof. Narang, who was born in the Balochistan village of Dukki, inherited his father’s passion for Urdu literature. Prof. Narang began his teaching career at St. Stephen’s College and has since held positions at Delhi University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Oslo.
Prof. Narang received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1995 for his book Sakhtiyat, Pas-Sakhtiyat, and Mashriqui Sheriyat (Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, and Eastern Poetics). He was accused of plagiarism, but the charges failed to hold up to literary analysis over time.
“He revisited Ghalib, Meer, Manto, Premchand, and Bedi and analyzed their work with critical acuity and widened the boundaries of theory, eschewing theme-centered criticism,” stated Prof. Shafey Kidwai, a former Sahitya Akademi member and author who worked closely with Prof. Narang.
