Gerda Weissmann Klein, a Holocaust survivor who became an author and activist after surviving three Nazi labor camps and a death march as a teenager, has died. She was 97 years old at the time.
Her death was originally announced by Kary Antholis, a documentary filmmaker who collaborated with Weissmann Klein on the Oscar-winning film One Survivor Remembers, which was based on her memoirs All But My Life. Weissmann Klein died on April 3, according to Antholis, but the cause of death was not disclosed.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I share that Gerda Weissmann Klein, the subject of my 1995 documentary One Survivor Remembers, passed away last night,” Antholis said. “May her memory be everlasting.”
The film, which Antholis has made public, has been added to the National Film Registry and is being utilized as a part of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program.
Since moving to the United States in May 1945, after being freed by US troops, including her future husband Lt. Kurt Klein, Weissmann Klein has garnered numerous awards for her writing and activism. Klein passed away in 2002.
Weissmann Klein was nominated to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum Council by former President Bill Clinton in 1997, and she was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Barack Obama in 2010.
