She was convicted of second-degree murder after shooting a girl called Okia Toomer at the age of sixteen and sentenced to two eight-year terms to be served concurrently at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup, Maryland. After six and a half years, she was liberated. Pearson said her life changed when Arnold Loney, a local drug dealer who watched out for her and brought her money to prison, was shot and killed when she was eighteen.
