In a Facebook post, his daughter Maggie DeMarco-Mieles said it was with a “broken heart” that she announced Dom’s death on Thursday. He was 85 years old at the time. She wrote, “He was the hardest working man I know, and he was and will continue to be a leader through his legacy.”
De Marco immigrated from Italy in 1959 and eventually founded a modest storefront on Avenue J in Midwood, which has now become a Brooklyn institution. Di Fara is a combination of his name and the name of a previous business partner whom DeMarco purchased in 1978.
DeMarco, a regular behind the counter, could be seen stretching the dough of each pie before it went into the oven, slathered in San Marzano tomatoes, three kinds of cheese, drizzled with olive oil and dusted with basil he snipped with scissors from his windowsill plant. Di Fara also has family-owned and managed locations in Williamsburg and Las Vegas.
However, the Midwood eatery serves one of the city’s most well-known and award-winning pies. Long queues are expected for a $5 slice that has impacted other giants, such as Lucali in Carroll Gardens. DeMarco has been dubbed the “Joe DiMaggio of pizza” by Mark Iacono of Lucali.
Shut Down in 2011
However, it hasn’t always been a pleasant experience. Di Fara was briefly shut down in 2011 due to frequent health infractions. In 2019, the state of New York confiscated the Midwood site, claiming Di Fara owed $167,500 in back taxes. The pizzeria’s temporary shutdown generated alarm in the city, prompting former Mayor Bill de Blasio to declare that he was “willing to do everything” to reopen it. It took two days for it to happen. And the lines continued to form.
Tributes are pouring in on Margie’s post. “One of the greatest men I ever got to know,” one person said. “He was an absolute legend and he must have been so proud at how hard you’ve worked to cement his legacy, which will go on and on,” another said.
