Mob Kills Political Advisor Daniel Picazo Mistaken With A Child Abuser
Authorities say a lynch mob assassinated a Mexican political advisor after child kidnapping allegations were posted on social media. In the central state of Puebla, Daniel Picazo, 31, was ambushed and battered by a throng of roughly 200 individuals.
He was touring the town of Papatlazolco when he was caught by a mob and carried into a nearby field, where he was set on fire. The attack was dubbed “barbarism” by local officials.
Mr Picazo was in town visiting his grandfather when rumors began to circulate on local WhatsApp group conversations that he had been involved in a child kidnapping. The mob then encircled and battered Mr Picazo and his two companions, according to local media, before taking him to a nearby field.
Police attempted to intervene by placing Mr Picazo in a patrol car, but were immediately swamped by villagers, who doused him in gasoline before setting him on fire.
Authorities were able to recover his body later.
The municipal council “highly disapproves this act” and “reiterates that illegal behavior must be judged via the procedures of our rule of law,” according to a statement.
Officials stated, “The appropriate authorities are already examining what happened to identify blame.”
According to local media, no one has been arrested in connection with the attack.
The Chamber of Deputies
Until March 2022, Mr Picazo was a member of Mexico’s legislative body, the Chamber of Deputies.
Mr Picazo was “a talented, passionate young man, committed to his nation and with huge goals in life,” according to Congresswoman Johanna Torress. She continued, “I pray to God for his rest and the well-being of his family.” One of the largest groups in the legislature, the National Action Party, requested “justice in the face of this sad occurrence.”
Mr Picazo is the second person lynched in the state of Puebla this year. Mob justice is widespread in parts of Mexico, particularly in more distant communities where authorities are slow to reach. A mob in the state thrashed and burned seven men alive in 2019.
