The Cork woman who died unexpectedly while on a mountain excursion on Saturday has been described as a doting mother full of pleasure, life, and vitality.
Cora O’Grady, a Mitchelstown woman in her early 50s, became ill while trekking with her son and daughter in Tipperary’s Galtee Mountains. Efforts were made to save her after she collapsed around 1 p.m. on Saturday. However, she was tragically declared dead one hour later.
Cora and her children took part in the climb to support Charlie Bird, a former RTÉ journalist who is climbing Croagh Patrick in Mayo for charity and suffers from Motor Neuron Disease. Ms. O’Grady’s body was taken to University Hospital Waterford for a post-mortem to determine her cause of death.
Fianna Fáil councilor Deirdre O’Brien stated she knew Cora both socially and as a constituent. “(Cora) could only be described as a loving mother who genuinely cared for her children.) Two children have been abandoned, which is such a pity.
“She was a lively, gregarious, and full-of-fun individual. The fact that this occurred while she was attempting to assist someone else adds to the tragedy. The family is in our thoughts and prayers.” Noel McCarthy of Fine Gael, a fellow councilor, recounted the tangible astonishment in the community.
“People were astonished even before hearing the name. Others I’ve met with have characterized Cora as a wonderful woman. This was a tragic catastrophe that has left everyone stunned.
He expressed his condolences to Cora’s family and friends, adding: “On that mountain, people have broken bones and fallen, but this is a rare catastrophe. All we can say is that the community is completely behind the family and will do all possible to help “r anguish.”
