Questions every parent will ask themselves after the tragedy of seven-year-old Conley Thompson

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Stopford, of South Yorkshire Police, explained that Conley had ended up in the plastic pipe and his weight had caused him to fall further into it and had pushed his clothing up, restricting his breathing.

Leeds-based Howard Civil Engineering Ltd, which was involved in work undertaken on the construction site, is due at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court today after a Health and Safety Executive investigation.

Conley Thompson’s family asks the public, not to ‘cast aspersions’ about his death

Builders found the body of little Conley Thompson, 7, when they arrived for work at the site which had no security guards or security fencing. The family of a seven-year-old Barnsley boy who died after getting stuck in a pipe on a construction site has urged people to stop “casting aspersions” about his death.

In a statement paying tribute to their “loving and caring” little boy, the family of Conley Thompson hit back at suggestions that he had been allowed to play out unsupervised.

They said they would never have allowed Conley to go unaccompanied to a park two miles from his home, and added: “For any parent, the loss of a child is unimaginable and while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we would please ask people to bear in mind this is now an actual reality for us, and please be respectful as his mum, and all of the family, try to come terms to a life without Conley.”

Conley was reported missing on Sunday 26 July after he failed to return home at 10 pm, having told his mother he was playing with friends. The youngster’s body was found on a construction site the following morning.

Initial reports suggested he had gone to play in Locke Park, a mile away from the site and about two miles away from his home, but police said they believe he may have gone elsewhere before entering the construction site.

South Yorkshire Police

In a statement issued through South Yorkshire police, Conley’s family said: “It is with great sadness and a broken heart that we find ourselves writing this. Words cannot describe the devastation we feel, especially for his mum.

“Firstly, the family would be grateful if any members of the community that are casting aspersions relating to Conley ever attending at Locke Park without an adult, either on the day he went missing or before that day, be kept to themselves.

“We want to make it very clear that we would never have allowed Conley to go to Locke Park without an adult at any time, and the police are tracing his exact movements that night so we will be able to understand what happened and what led to us losing our playful and loving boy.”

They described the schoolboy as “cheeky, mischievous and loud, but also loving and caring, with a heart of gold”.

Tributes by Family

His family added: “As with most boys his age, Conley lived life large and loud, with a zest for adventure and curiosity.

“His mum and the rest of the family would like to give a special and heartfelt thank you to all the officers, both from the police and the fire service, who helped search for Conley, as well as all the friends, neighbors, and members of the community.
