Cori “Coco” Gauff is an American professional Tennis player from Atlanta, Georgina, the United States born on March 13, 2004. She has a great career-high ranking of world No. 11 in singles, reached on 11 July 2022, and No. 1 in doubles, achieved on 15 August 2022. She is one of the best tennis players at a young age.

Coco Gauff had a very long week in Toronto playing in the doubles final on Sunday winning it but she wasn’t as fortunate in this one. The young American faced a very tricky opponent Marie Bouzkova, one that keeps the ball in play and forces you to over-hit trying to win the point.
Some of that was on display in this match as well but ultimately rolled ankle proved too much to overcome. Gauff sustained a left ankle injury and eventually, she had to retire and withdraw from the tournament.
The 18-year-old Gauff has lost in the quarterfinals in each of her previous 2 events after reaching the French Open final in spring before losing to Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked player in the world. Gauff was playing doubles with Jessica Pegula in the tournament and there was no immediate word on whether she will continue or not.
She lost that game and that was the start of a 4-0 run by Bouzkova who won the opening set 7-5. She broke Gauff in the first game of the 2nd set as well and the young American elected to retire. Fans are hoping that the injury is not severe and she will be ready for the US open.

Coco Gauff was named Cori after her father, Corey, and received his nickname of Coco as well. Gauff’s father played Division 1 basketball at Georgia State University. Her mother, Candi, was a gymnast who also participated in Division I track and field at Florida State University.

To support Coco’s tennis training and career, her parents decided to leave their jobs and move back to Delray Beach, Florida. Early life and Career of Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff’s parents were athletes, they wanted their firstborn child to pursue a sport. Coco Gauff began playing tennis at the age of 6. When she was 10, she traveled to France to work with Patrick Mouratoglou, who already coached Serena Williams. She has continued to train with Mouratoglou, but now her father is her main coach.
Coco Gauff won the United States Tennis Association Clay Court National Under-12 title in 2014. In 2017 she became second at the U.S. Open Girl’s Junior Championships. The next year she became junior champion at the French Open Championship.

Coco Gauff made her debut on ITF Women’s Circuit in May 2018 as a qualifier in the $25K event at Osprey, where she won her first professional match. She received a wild card into qualifying at US Open but lost her opening match 5 months after turning 14 years old.
In June 2019, 15-year-old Gauff scrambled to get to London after receiving a wild card slot to play at Wimbledon. In the first round, she faced off against Venus Williams. Williams was not only a five-time champion at Wimbledon, but she and her sister Serena Williams were Gauff’s tennis idols.
Gauff made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019, to become the youngest player to do so since 1991. Her success inspired a lot of young people all around the world. Soon after that, she lasted until the third round of the U.S. Open, again being the youngest to accomplish this since 1991.
Coco’s first WTA title came at Austria’s Linz Open in October 2019. This triumph was made possible because she became a “lucky loser” who got to the tournament’s main draw after another player left due to injury. She also became WTA’s one of the top 100 players meeting the goal she set for herself.

Starting the year she ranked No. 67, Gauff started 2020 playing Auckland Open in New Zealand. In singles, she defeated Viktoria Kuzmova before losing to Laura Siegemund in the second round. Playing doubles with McNally, Gauff reached the semifinals. But she loosed to eventual champions, Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad.

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in one year delay in the 2020 Olympic Games. In 2021, Gauff was selected for the U.S. Olympic team following her success at the French Open in June. She would have been the youngest tennis Olympian since 2000 but sadly, the positive Covid test forced Gauff to withdraw from the Olympics Games.
