Gushue is a six-time provincial junior curling champion in his home province of Newfoundland (1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), the last five as skip. He won a bronze medal at the 1999 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, a silver medal at the 2000 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, and a gold medal at the 2001 Canadian Junior Curling Championships.
In 2001, he not only won the provincial championship, but also the Canadian Juniors and World Junior Championships. Gushue also competed in the 1998 World Junior Championships as an alternate for John Morris, who won the event.
Gushue made an amazing transition into men’s curling after an outstanding junior career, and his team rapidly became a formidable force. He qualified for the Nokia Brier in 2003, where he ended 6–5. Gushue proved not only that he was one of the finest curlers in Newfoundland, but also one of the best in Canada when his team won the Nokia Brier in 2004 with an 8–4 record.
