A jury found Billy Ray Turner guilty of all charges in the death of NBA star Lorenzen Wright. Billy Ray Turner was convicted guilty of first-degree murder in the 2010 shooting death of Memphis native and NBA player Lorenzen Wright by a Shelby County jury.
Judge Lee Coffee sentenced Turner to life in prison for the murder conviction. According to the verdict of the trial in court, Billy Ray Turner, the alleged killer in the Lorenzen Wright murder case, is ultimately proven guilty.
The victim was a well-liked Memphis native and a Booker T Washington graduate who spent two years playing basketball at Memphis State before joining the NBA. He also played for the Memphis Grizzlies for a short time.
Wright was last spotted by his wife leaving with an undisclosed sum of money on July 18, 2010. A 911 call from the basketball player’s cell phone was answered by a Germantown dispatcher the next day. The dispatcher heard eleven gunshots.
Nine Days Later
Nine days later, Memphis police recovered Wright’s decomposing body in a field in southeast Memphis. Turner and Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson, were charged in 2017 with Wright’s murder. In 2019, Wright-Robinson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder facilitation and is currently incarcerated.
The jury returned a unanimous “guilty” judgment on all three counts — first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and attempted first-degree murder — after less than three hours of deliberation.
Because all allegations were found invalid, Billy Ray Turner’s attorney was unable to represent him as innocent. The decisions in the case were not overturned even decades later.

Due to the time gap between when Wright was killed and when authorities discovered his horrifically decomposed body, investigators lost crucial evidence that would have facilitated a faster investigation.
The case was believed closed for several years until detectives discovered grounds to reconsider Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright’s involvement.
Sherra Wright was indicted at the same time as Turner at the end of 2017. She is currently serving a 30-year sentence in prison.
