Arshad Ayub, a well regarded educationist in the country, died early this morning.
His son, Azmi Arshad, shared the news on Facebook today, saying that burial plans would be announced later because his father’s body was still in the hospital.
Between 1965 to 1975, Arshad, aged 93, was the inaugural director of Institut Teknologi Mara (now UiTM).
He was brought to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Tuesday owing to failing health, and he died at 2.06 a.m. today.

Arshad graduated with a diploma in Agriculture from the College of Agriculture in Serdang, Selangor. He went on to pursue a degree in Economics and Statistics at the University College of Wales Aberystwyth in the United Kingdom and graduated in 1958.

Arshad left ITM after ten years to become deputy governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (1975-1977) and then deputy director-general of the Prime Minister’s Department’s Economics Planning Unit (1977–1978).
Arshad also served as secretary general of three ministries: the Ministry of Primary Industries (1978), the Ministry of Agriculture (1979–1981), and the Ministry of Land and Regional Development (1981–1983).
In 1983, Arshad stepped down from the civil service.
