Ms. Beary and her pals were in the United States on a popular J-1 summer working visa when tragedy struck.
The balcony was built by a business that had a history of legal lawsuits against it that it had failed to disclose to the California state licensing agency that oversees the construction sector.
The fall claimed the lives of five Irish students and one Irish-American friend, while seven others were seriously injured.
The families of that slain secured a secret deal with the building’s construction company in 2017.
Traumatic brain damage, broken arms, hands, pelvis, and jaw, as well as lacerations to her liver, kidneys, and spleen, a collapsed lung, and broken ribs, were all suffered by Aoife Beary. Later, she had open-heart surgery.
She told legislators during tearful testimony that the injury had taken away much of her independence and that her career dreams had been shattered.
“It’s changed my life forever,” she remarked.
She also talked about how she and her buddies, whom she had known since she was four years old, had traveled throughout the world together. Her birthday would now “always be their anniversary,” she remarked.
Ashley Donohoe, 22, of Rohnert Park, and Olivia Burke, Eoghan Colligan, Niccolai Schuster, Lorean Miller, and Eimear Walsh, all 21 and from Ireland, were among the six persons killed.

The balcony and apartment complex, which were built between 2005 and 2007, had substantial dry rot damage in the wooden support beams that held the construction together.
Beary spoke before state lawmakers a year after the collapse in support of SB465, a measure that would require the California Contractors State License Board to examine substandard construction more closely and determine whether existing building standards need to be amended.
Beary was brought to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital on December 29 and died three days later. Her parents, brother, and sister are her only survivors.
