Greek alpinist Antonios Sykaris dies after scaling Mt Dhaulagiri
A renowned climber from Greece breathed his last while descending from the summit point early this morning on Mt Dhaulagiri, according to sources from the base camp.
Antonios Sykaris, who fell ill while descending the mountain just below the summit point, died at a height of 7,400 meters, according to sources.
On Monday, the Greek alpinist and his guide, Dawa Sherpa, topped the 8,167-meter peak. Antonios had already climbed Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse, and Mt Annapurna as part of an expedition led by Seven Summit Treks. Dawa, who spent hours assisting a fellow climber down the mountain, is now waiting for a rescue squad near Camp III, according to sources.
Seven Summit Treks has already dispatched a team to save Dawa and recover Antonios’ body from the high camp, according to SST Chairman Mingma Sherpa, who also stated that his family has been informed of the event.
Sykaris had 32 years of mountaineering and climbing experience and had been on over 66 mountaineering expeditions around the world.
