Anne had a number of near-death experiences in the past. On December 14, 1998, she nearly died after going into a coma, which was later proved to be caused by diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). She was eventually diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and discovered to be insulin-dependent. Rice had gastric bypass surgery in 2003, on the advice of her husband and shortly after his death, and lost 103 pounds. Rice nearly died again in 2004 due to an intestine blockage or bowel obstruction, a common side effect of gastric bypass surgery, when she fell into a severe diabetic coma, according to Newsweek in 2005.

Rice spent the majority of her childhood in New Orleans, which serves as the backdrop for many of her works. After a year of therapy for her OCD, Rice attended the Squaw Valley Writer’s Conference in August 1974, which was directed by writer Ray Nelson. Rice met her future literary agent, Phyllis Seidel, at the conference. Seidel sold the publishing rights to Interview with the Vampire to Alfred A.

Knopf in October 1974 for a $12,000 advance on the hardback rights, at a time when most new authors received $2,000 advances. In May 1976, Interview with the Vampire was published. For the first time, the Rices visited Europe and Egypt in 1977.
