Anne had a number of near-death experiences in the past. On December 14, 1998, she nearly died after going into a coma, which was later proved to be caused by diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). She was eventually diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and discovered to be insulin-dependent. Rice had gastric bypass surgery in 2003, on the advice of her husband and shortly after his death, and lost 103 pounds. Rice nearly died again in 2004 due to an intestine blockage or bowel obstruction, a common side effect of gastric bypass surgery, when she fell into a severe diabetic coma, according to Newsweek in 2005.
