Akira Takarada, the original 1954 “Godzilla” and several subsequent pictures starring the city-wrecking monster, died in Tokyo at the age of 87.

Takarada made an appearance in a wheelchair at a stage greeting for the film Yononaka ni Taete Sakura no Nakariseba on March 10. On March 13, his condition suddenly deteriorated, and he died between midnight and the early morning on March 14. Takarada was born on April 29, 1934, in Tokyo, Japan. In April 1953, he debuted in the entertainment industry as part of TOHO’s “New Face” program.

Takarada has appeared in the Japanese Godzilla films as Hideto Ogata in the original 1954 picture, as well as the sequels Mothra vs. Godzilla, Invasion of Astro-Monster, and Godzilla Versus the Sea Monster.
